Total Disability Insurance Cover

By Mark Cunningham

When accidents occur that prevent your from working, a disability policy can be a lifesaver. This type of cover could help financially if you are prevented from attending work. The last thing anyone who is handicapped wants is to worry about providing an income for their family. Statistics show that a person is more likely to have an extended break period from their normal work place, owing to accident or injury, and need disability cover, than they are to die before they reach 65 years old.

It is an unfortunate fact that most people think they have a bigger chance of dying than being laid off work through disability therefore life insurance policies are more popular. Despite reports showing that a middle aged worker has a greater chance of needing a 3 month break from work because of an accident as opposed to dying before they reach 65, is virtually impossible. Of course, when someone is seeking disability insurance cover, it is imperative to find the best prices and plans available.

Some of the factors needed to evaluate the premium include the age and health of the applicant but the largest part to calculate is how much income they will need while they are incapacitated. One method of lowering the insurance premium is arranging for the plan to 'kick in' only after the incapacity has lasted for a set period of time. The provider would be less at risk if was only a short term incapacity. A reduced period of cover option would also reduce the premium, This may ease the potential burden to the insurance company but can be a problem if the time out of work lasts longer than the plan provides for.

Almost all plans are based on a percentage of salary so even with this protection a certain shortfall will exist. Health insurers offer two main types of coverage wants to claim total disability and be completely covered financially, they will have to show that they are unable to perform the majority of the tasks they could previously.

Whatever the position, a person making a claim owing to incapacitation will be sent a disability benefit check every month until the end of the plan or they go back to work. Other key points to consider when looking into health insurance policies are if there are restrictions on:

If there are any medical restrictions Is the benefit taxable? How long the benefits will be paid for Your up-to-date occupation

Each insurance policy is different so the amount of salary the disability insurance plan will pay will depend entirely on the insurance policy you decide to go with. The cover they supply can be anywhere between forty to seventy percent of the original salary, which is quite a difference. This one fact amongst all of them should be the most essential one to check on in detail because once you are handicapped it is too late.
