What Is Done Right In Public Health and Health Insurance

By Ethan Kalvin

Swine flu has swept onto the health care stage recently and the concern is how to protect Americans if we end up facing a pandemic. Most national citizens are of the opinion that the US has the best health care in the world and that's the reason why Mexico is having a difficult time of maintaining life for it's people. Supposedly Americans have access to great medical care and health insurance so may be protected from facing the issues arising in Mexico for their people and their government. So a question arises, why are we still maintaining our health better than the citizens of Mexico?

Well, it is not that I dont appreciate the health care that we have here in the states, however, the main thing that Americans have that other countries dont is the CDC. This is actually a huge help when dealing with the swine flu or any disease or illness that is easily spread. The CDC works in conjunction with the WHO to help locate, detect and trace cases of spreadable diseases, and help limit them while searching for treatments, cures and vaccines. Although our medical system is more advanced in its reporting than in third world countries.

There are some other issues in foreign lands creating a higher incidence of health crisis similar to the current swine flu outbreak. Examples are poor hygiene, communal living, lack of clean water supply, poor nutrition and a lack of knowledge regarding disease.

So although we definitely are facing some serious health care issues and people are questioning not only the benefits of the health insurance system, but also the entire health care system in general, realize that the government does work to keep us healthy by providing a good clean water supply, access to nutritious food, and a government agency to monitor the spread of diseases that is fully armed with the resources to address the outbreak in the US.

This crisis is really important but there are many health care issues the government provides for us, even though there are pieces and parts of this system that need work. We have the health insurance and medical coverage to keep us healthy but public health provides much more. While staying abreast of this current crisis, keep in mind we have a wonderful public health system in place to keep us all as healthy as possible.
