Dental Plans Versus Dental Insurance

By Wade Henderson

Before you decide to get dental care, first you need to know that dental plans are different from dental insurance. Although their names are alike and can easily be confused, these two things involve different services.

Now that you know that there is such difference you can do research accordingly in order to choose one that provides greatest benefits for you.

Let us talk first about dental plans. Dental plans are provided both by dental plan companies or dental insurance companies. The first thing they will request from you is your signature on a contract. There is a some paperwork involved but it is a rather simple procedure that will enable you to get a percentage off on dental procedures done by your dentist or one that you choose from a list of doctors they will provide. You will need to pay the membership and submit your application in order to start using your plan.

There is little complication with dental plans when it comes to getting discounts because you do not really need to wait for the paperwork to be approved to get your money back. You may choose to go to your same practitioner or choose one from the pre-established network.

Dental insurance on the other hand is a more complex procedure. They will first ask you to prove that you do not have preexisting conditions, and you will have to also have a doctor perform some tests on you in order for the application to be approved. The payment dynamics are also different. With using your dental insurance, you will have to cover the cost of the procedure and submit more documents to get your money back.

It is easy to see how choosing one or the other is complicated. It is important to always read the terms and conditions of every contract we sign. Different policies will cover you for different things, have different discounts and payments.

Some types of insurance will cover the dental work done on your spouse and will cover for certain basic preventive services. There is usually a pre-established percentage of coverage for certain services. Family dental insurance can be a very good idea because it allows your family to save some money and have quality dental care.

Do research on what dental insurance policies or plans are the most appropriate for your family group or profession.
